First, I agree with you in general that a box of chocolates is a perfect gift.  But the nutrition science nerd in me (and it's also my profession, so I've been probably overly educated and am a certified nerd in this field) wants to qualify some of your comments.

The health research on cocoa is terrific but not absolute.  Any cocoa processed with alkali (Dutched) loses nearly all of its antioxidants, yet it comprises a fair amount of what many people consume.  Even minimally handled cocoa, while it seems to lower risk, possibly due to it's high flavanoid content, cannot be said to prevent all the conditions you noted.  Believe me, you won't believe how much I wish it could.  As for weight loss, consumption may be "associated" with a lower body weight in some studies, the "cause-and-effect" relationship cannot be made -- yet.  As for the omega-3 fat content, the majority of the fat in chocolate is saturated (palmitic and stearic acids).  That said, it doesn't seem to raise "bad" cholesterol either.  In terms of aiding weight loss, calories still count, so if you overeat it and don't balance elsewhere, it'll contribute to weight gain.  I do like to emphasize to weight-loss patients who love chocolate however, that an ounce of dark chocolate is only about 160 calories and can be far more satisfying than a slice of cake and at far fewer calories.  To get the real health benefits however, it really needs to be 70% cocoa content.  Lower than that is fine for taste, but I tend to move it to the category of "candy", even if it's still lower in sugar than many other candy.

Here's where I express what is strictly my opinion.  With chocolate, quality is everything.  Price doesn't guarantee quality, but the good stuff usually does cost more, so it's less accessible.  It's worth it if you think of it in terms of the experience.  When people think I'm crazy for spending US $15 on an 80-gram bar of Criollo I tell them it'll last a few days (OK maybe only two days) than the fancy bottle of wine for which they paid more and that will disappear in a few hours.  I say score one for the chocophiles.

I say this in a very friendly manner.  I just tend to take things like health claims seriously.  As a health professional, I'm ethically bound to be very evidence-based, and I never want to over-extend claims because it's too easy for people to misinterpret, which leads to misinformation.  With the best regards,
