Dear Clay,Thanks for your congrats on the article. We are proud of making the Top 5, however, please keep in mind that this was an unofficial tasting by some of the staff at Mother Earth News and their comments and decisions were based on that. While I agree that the subject of fair trade was probably not completely researched, I have to agree with them on the flavorfulness of organic, fair trade chocolate.I encourage people to do their own tasting and research. While I'm sure that there are many fine chocolate companies that care about the quality of their chocolate even though they are not certified, consumers can be assured that organic, fair-trade chocolates have met all the standards required for that certification. I can only speak for our certifying agencies, Trans Fair USA and CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers).I love our spirited debates Clay. I bow to your vast knowledge about chocolate, but being on the "certified chocolate company" end of the debate, I have to put forth my feelings on the issue.Reonne
Reonne:Congrats on being selected to be among the Top 5 in Whole Earth News.Without taking anything away from your selection to be in the Top 5, this really is a very poorly researched article that takes the assertions of the "Fair" Trade movement at face value without doing any original research or fact checking. The issues I have with the article start in the first sentence, "Not only is organic, fair trade chocolate better for everyone ... the flavor trumps that of conventional chocolate every time."If this were true, ALL chocolate would be certified organic and Fair Trade.Unfortunately, there is absolutely no correlation between the certifications a chocolate company pays for and the quality; taste, texture, or any other measure - of the chocolate.
